The Road Less Travelled

Feminist foreign policy is au courant, but what does it actually mean in practice? Jennifer’s talk explores this very question, making a case for why every nation state should seek to implement a foreign policy strategy, which has its core a feminist analytic perspective. Jennifer Cassidy is an Irish author, diplomatic consultant, and international development specialist. She has served as a political attaché to Ireland’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations (New York), the European External Action Service to the Kingdom of Cambodia, and Ireland’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade during its 2013 Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

Now at the University at Oxford, Jennifer researches and lectures on the very game she once played. Her primary research centres on the theme of Digital Diplomacy; questioning how diplomatic agents use social media platforms during times of political crises, and the extent their use can be deemed (in) effective within diplomatic crises communication strategies. Alongside this work, she is producing a forthcoming book on Gender and Diplomacy, on which her TEDx talk is based. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organised by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx
